Title: Writing binges and caffeine highs Date: 2009-10-07
I've been in a funk... no other way to put it. The band hasn't been playing out very much, mostly due to scheduling problems. Summer, my favorite season, is clearly over. It's dark when I go to work in the morning, and it's starting to get dark by the time I get home. Not cool.
We had intended to spend the whole Summer recording as much as possible... just here or there when we had the time, but, as is so often the case, that made a lot more sense on paper than it did in real life. We spent the majority of our time setting up and tearing down, and never actually did too much recording. We got SOME things done, mind you, just not a lot, and certainly not ENOUGH.
The good news (from my point of view, at least), is that I've/we've been on a bit of a writing binge. I've been working on a bunch of acoustic songs that I'll probably make available at some point in the next six months or so. Don't know exactly what that will look like... CD, mp3s, free, cheap, expensive, etc... These are songs that didn't quite work for where the band was going, but in my opinion, are good songs, and I'd like them to be heard. So there.
The better news is that the band has a bunch of new songs that we're ready to put down, and we've scheduled a lock-in type weekend at the end of October where we will refuse to leave the house until we've recorded six or more songs. It's an ambitious goal, but we feel like we have to make up for lost time. Hopefully, this will work out really well, and after one or two more lock-ins, we'll have something good to show for it.
Ken Kelemen, a friend of ours who's worked with David Janes and a bunch of other Philly local bands, will be stepping in to engineer and to keep us from going off the deep end by adding in all those totally rad kazoo solos. Check him out at his myspace here.
SO, with all of that said, I will now go watch leaves fall off of trees, and hopefully, in a little while, we'll have some new songs to share with you.
Peace!

PS - I've been addicted to good lyrics lately... Songs or albums that really capture EXACTLY what a person feels in the situation the song is talking about. Examples: Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker. Is there any better album to listen to when you're in a funk? Or if I'm on a caffeine high and just want to be thrilled about life, I'm pretty sure I'm going to play Weezer's Pork and Beans. I'd love to hear what albums/songs/artists you listen to when you're in a given kind of mood. Shoot me an email, and maybe I'll post your thoughts on the site.
