Title: Woodstown is NOT boring! Date: 2009-03-09
We're a Woodstown-based band*. Four out of five of us live here (or within a mile or two of it), and many of the shows we play are in town. In fact, by way of a shameless plug, we have a show coming up at the Woodstown Diner/Theo's Pub on March 21st. In preparation for that show, I've made a concerted effort to connect with Woodstown people on myspace and personally invite them to the show.
While paging through the profiles of all these Woodstown-ers, I noticed a VERY common theme in the comments, blogs, and "about me" sections of many users: everybody who lives in Woodstown thinks Woodstown is BORING. Huh. Is it? Let's think about that. Here are some things Woodstown has to offer: (I should preface this by saying that I am not sponsored by any of these things/businesses... I'm just an honest believer in our town.)
1) Woodstown has the oldest weekly running rodeo in the United States. That's something, isn't it? It HAS to be! In fact, whenever someone asks where I'm from, I say "Woodstown... you know... Cowtown?" Lots of people have been to the rodeo. And, if they haven't, they probably would love to go. And, if you do go, make sure to say hi to Josh, our drummer, who plays for the Cowtown house band "Dave and the Wranglers."
2) The Cowtown Flea Market. If you've never been to this thing, you absolutely have to. It's insane. There are people everywhere, and you can buy anything from furniture to underwear to a used Mac (I have done all of the above).
3) Like to drink? Why not try the Woodstown Hotel? Mr. D's? Corner Bar? Woodstown Pub (Theo's)? We've got to have one of the highest ratios of bar to individual in any city anywhere. There's always someone hanging out drinking somewhere. In Woodstown, it's always five o'clock. :)
4) Woodstown Fall Festival. Have you been to other towns' fall festivals? A lot of them are pretty crappy. Woodstown's is always a good time. It's actually a shame that it only happens once a year. You always see tons of people, and there's a ton of events going on all day.
5) Auburn Road Winery. We have a %$#-ing winery! In our town! We're one step away from being the next California! Not only do they make wine, but they also have bands play there every weekend. Are you going to tell me that's not cool? It also leads me to...
6) Local music. You may or may not have seen this coming, but on any given weekend-night, you can find 61 North, A Little Affair, Northern Lights, or Adams Wilson :) at some local venue. There's probably other bands that I'm missing. Even if there's only those four, that's still a good excuse to go hang somewhere, meet new people, and listen to music. If you go see some band in Philly, you'll pay for gas, toll, parking, and a cover charge. Plus, the drinks and food will be astronomically expensive. I think you can have a great time on a weekend in our town for less than $20 bucks. In THIS economy, how can you pass that up?
I'll end with this: if Woodstown IS boring, what are you gonna do to make it more interesting? I've always believed that if something is broken, you shouldn't wait for someone else to fix it; you should do it yourself. I think we can make this place a scene. I think our town could be the next hot spot if we got up off our rear-ends and did something! What are your ideas? How do we do it? Email me: adams@adamswilson.net.
Let's start something! No idea is too crazy! We can make Woodstown the place to be. WOODSTOWN IS NOT BORING!
*Whenever I say Woodstown, I mean to say Woodstown/Pilesgrove. We're basically the same town. Same school. Same library. Same post office. Same zip code.
